Canada Triumphs Over USA 2-1 in 2025 CONCACAF Nations League Third-Place playoff

Canada beat the United States 2-1 in the third-place match of the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The result gave Canada a third-place finish in the tournament and their second straight win over the U.S.

Canada took the lead in the 27th minute when Tani Oluwaseyi scored his first goal for the national team. The U.S. answered in the 35th minute through Patrick Agyemang, who scored his first goal in Nations League play, assisted by Diego Luna. In the second half, Jonathan David gave Canada the lead again in the 59th minute with a left-footed shot from inside the box. That goal turned out to be the game-winner.





Weston McKennie made his 60th appearance for the U.S. in the match. For Canada, midfielders Mathieu Choinière and Ismaël Koné played solid games, and Tajon Buchanan caused problems on the right wing the majority of the game.



The nature of the game created tense moments during the game. Canada’s coach Jesse Marsch was shown a red card just before halftime after arguing with the referee. notably and unfortunately for Bayern Munich Alphonso Davies had to leave the game with what looked like a knee injury. The gravity of the injury is yet to be examined, and would be a major blow for the german team considering that after their march 29th match agaisnt St. Pauli, they are set to face inter Milan in the first leg Champions League quarter finals.


The USMNT loss has raised questions about how prepared the U.S. is ahead of the Gold Cup this summer and the 2026 World Cup approaching. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino said the team will review the performance and focus on improving in the coming months. For now, Thierry Henry summed it up best. "We came here looking for answers and we leave with more questions."
