The match started with Mexico keeping strong possession of the ball. In the 8th minute, forward Raúl Jiménez capitalized on a cross from Roberto Alvarado, delivering a header that found the back of the net and gave Mexico a 1-0 lead. Jiménez’s early goal set an aggressive tone for “El Tri.”

As the first half drew to a close, Panama responded. In stoppage time, a foul on Cecilio Waterman led to a penalty. Midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla capitalized on the penalty, sending the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.

The second half saw both teams vying for control, with Mexico gradually intensifying their offensive efforts. The deadlock persisted until stoppage time when an awkard handball by Panama’s José Córdoba resulted in a penalty for Mexico. Jiménez confidently took the penalty in the 92nd minute, placing the ball into the top right corner and securing his second goal of the match. This decisive strike sealed the 2-1 victory for Mexico.

Jiménez’s performance was instrumental throughout the tournament, as he scored all four of Mexico’s goals during the Nations League Finals, including a brace in the semifinal against Canada. His contributions earned him the tournament’s  the best player accolade.

Midfielder Roberto Alvarado also played a pivotal role, providing the assist for Jiménez’s opening goal in the final. Defensively, goalkeeper Luis Malagon made crucial saves, particularly in the second half, to maintain Mexico’s advantage. The Club America goalie was also awarded with best goalie of the tournament.

This triumph is significant for Mexico, as it breaks the United States’ streak of three consecutive Nations League titles since the tournament’s inception in 2021. Aside the trophy, the confidence and team work becomes instrumental as they prepare to play the gold and continue to seek top form in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
