The Costa Rican Football Federation (FEDEFUTBOL) has officially appointed Miguel “El Piojo” Herrera as the head coach of the men’s national team, effective January 7, 2025. Herrera, a distinguished Mexican football manager, is renowned for his dynamic coaching style and previous tenure with the Mexican national team.

Herrera’s coaching career includes successful stints with top Mexican clubs such as Club América and Tigres UANL. Notably, he led Mexico to a Round of 16 appearance in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, earning acclaim for his passionate sideline demeanor.
In his new role, Herrera is tasked with revitalizing Costa Rica’s national team, known as “La Sele,” following their recent exit from the Concacaf Nations League. His primary objective is to guide the team through the qualification process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

FEDEFUTBOL President Rodolfo Villalobos expressed confidence in Herrera’s appointment, stating, “Miguel’s extensive experience and proven track record make him the ideal candidate to lead our national team towards future successes.”
Herrera’s appointment has been met with enthusiasm from both players and fans, who anticipate a new era of competitive performance under his leadership. His immediate focus will be on assembling a cohesive squad capable of excelling in upcoming international fixtures, with an emphasis on integrating emerging talents with seasoned veterans.
As Herrera assumes his new position, the football community will closely monitor his strategies and the impact of his leadership on Costa Rica’s performance in regional and global tournaments.
