Reports emerged regarding an incident involving Uruguayan midfielder Nicolás Fonseca, a player for Mexican club León. Initial accounts suggested that Fonseca had been kidnapped while en route to a training session; however, subsequent clarifications have provided a more accurate depiction of the events.

According to the club’s official statement, Fonseca was the victim of a robbery near the team’s training facilities. The incident occurred on a highway between León, Guanajuato, and the state of Jalisco. During the robbery, assailants intercepted Fonseca, stole his vehicle—a BMW—and other personal belongings. Contrary to early media reports, the club emphasized that Fonseca was not kidnapped and did not suffer any physical harm. He has since resumed regular training with his teammates in preparation for the upcoming match against Tijuana.

Local media outlets had initially reported that Fonseca was abducted and later abandoned in a remote area. These claims were refuted by the club, which urged the public to disregard rumors and avoid disseminating false information on such sensitive matters. The Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office has announced its collaboration with Jalisco authorities to investigate the robbery and apprehend the perpetrators.

This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in certain regions of Mexico. The city of León, located in Guanajuato, has experienced elevated crime rates in recent years, partly due to conflicts between rival criminal organizations. Despite these challenges, Club León remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its players and staff.

Nicolás Fonseca, 24, joined Club León in early 2025 after a tenure with Argentina’s River Plate. His integration into the team has been positive, and he continues to be an active participant in the club’s ongoing season. The club’s prompt response to the incident and the player’s swift return to training demonstrate a resilient and focused approach amidst external adversities.
