The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has initiated an investigation into José Luis Munuera Montero, a La Liga referee, over potential conflicts of interest related to his off-field business activities. This action follows recent controversies surrounding his officiating decisions, notably during the Osasuna vs. Real Madrid match.

Munuera Montero is the founder of Talentus Sports, a consultancy and sports management firm. The company’s clientele reportedly includes prominent organizations such as LaLiga, UEFA, the RFEF itself, and football clubs like Atlético de Madrid, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain. The RFEF’s Compliance Committee is examining whether his involvement with Talentus Sports violates the federation’s Regulatory Code, which prohibits referees from engaging in secondary interests that could interfere with their professional duties.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Munuera Montero has been temporarily suspended from officiating any matches. The RFEF emphasizes its commitment to good governance and has stated that all necessary guarantees will be respected throughout the process. Munuera Montero is reportedly cooperating fully, having provided the required documentation to facilitate the inquiry.

If found in violation of the RFEF’s ethical standards, Munuera Montero could face significant sanctions, including a financial penalty of up to €100,000 and a suspension from refereeing duties for up to five years. The investigation is currently in its evidence-gathering phase, and no definitive conclusions have been reached.

This inquiry gains additional significance in light of Munuera Montero’s recent officiating during the Osasuna vs. Real Madrid match, where he issued a red card to Jude Bellingham for alleged dissent. The decision sparked considerable debate and intensified scrutiny of Munuera Montero’s professional conduct.

The RFEF has pledged to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, with findings to be made public upon completion.
